frequently asked questions
Why do you use soy wax in your candles?
We love soy wax because it is a vegetable by-product, made from the oil of soybean, making it a renewable resource. This wax is vegan, natural, and only utilizes FDA approved waxes.
Soy wax burns 30-50% slower than paraffin wax, giving you a candle that lasts longer. This wax is also environmentally friendly, producing minimal to no soot while burning, and releasing no harmful toxins into the air.
Because we use 100% soy with no additives, you may notice some very normal characteristics of soy candles such as slight discolouring over time, frosting, bumpy tops after burning, small air bubbles. These characteristics won’t affect the performance of your candle.
What do you scent your candles with?
We only use clean, high-quality fragrance and essential oils, free of propellants, hazardous phthalates and parabens, in all our products.
Are your candles suitable for vegans?
Yes. We proudly do not use any animal-derived ingredients in any of our products.
How long do your candles burn?
These burn times are an estimate based on appropriate candle care and wick trimming.
4 oz candles burn up to 25 – 30 hours
8 oz candles burn up to 40 – 50 hours
How can I burn my candles safely?
- On first burn, burn approx. 3-4 hours to reach an almost full wax pool to avoid tunneling.
- With every consecutive burn, keep wick trimmed to about 1/4” inch. This helps prevent the flame from getting too high.
- For best results, use a long lighter (hold it to the wick for about 5 seconds) to properly fuel the flame.
- To avoid fire hazard, never leave a burning candle unattended. Extinguish all candles when you leave a room.
- Don't place a burning candle near clothing, books, curtains, or anything flammable.
- Keep lit candles away from children and pets.
- Keep lit candles away from drafts, ceiling fans, and any air currents.
- Always place your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface.
- A candle should not be burned for more than 4 hours at a time.
- Don’t burn a candle all the way down. For a margin of safety, discontinue burning a candle when 1/2 inch of wax remains in the container. The good news is that this means you get to try a new candle!
Why is my candle tunnelling?
The first time you burn your candle, burn it for approximately 3-4 hours. This will not only maximize the fragrance throw, but also help avoid “tunnelling.” Candle tunnelling happens when a candle burns down its centre, leaving a ring of hard wax around the outside. This is a result of your candle not given enough time to fully melt to the edges. This leftover wax means your candle won’t achieve its maximum burn-time and the wick will become more and more difficult to light and eventually be drowned by melting wax. With our candles, if there is about a ¼ inch or a little bit more of wax around the outside on the first couple of burns, this will self-correct after a couple more light ups. Make sure to keep your candle away from drafts or moving air – moving air disturbs the flame and can lead to an uneven burn.
However, if there is still excess wax around the edges, there are thankfully several things you can do to help your candle burn evenly and efficiently, leaving as little residual wax as possible. Our favourite method is using foil:
1. Light your candle. Poke a hole in a piece of aluminium foil and place around the top of the candle.
2. This allows the heat to stay in and melt the rim of hard wax on the sides. Always keeping your candle in eyesight, leave it sitting for 1-2 hours. Check every half hour, and eventually you’ll have a good even wax pool and a re-set candle. Please be careful when removing the foil, it will be hot!
Note: If there’s too much liquid wax that is now drowning the wick, use a tissue paper to soak up the excess (when candle is unlit) and level out the wax! The aim of the foil method is to increase the heat trapped at the top of the candle, hopefully enabling the stubborn hard wax left up the sides to melt.
Why is there black smoke coming from my candle?
Black smoke or “sooting” can happen if the wick is too long or there is a draft nearby. Keep your candle away from open windows or fans and make sure to trim the wick to 2-3 mm before every light. We recommend using a wick trimmer or nail clippers to trim your wick!
Why do you recommend leaving approx. ½” of wax in bottom of candle?
For safety, we recommend that you don’t burn the candle all the way down and instead, leave approx. ½” of wax in the bottom. However, if you have a wax melter, feel free to scoop that remaining wax out and enjoy more time with your favourite scent in the wax melter.
What is the difference between a wood and cotton wick?
It's up to personal preference! wood wicks give a small crackling sound that mimics a fireplace and can require a bit more love to maintain. A cotton wick does not give off any sound and requires less maintenance. they both burn at about the same rate, depending on user care. Currently, we are loving our cotton wicks, which are lead-free and zinc-free. We might consider a collection that includes wood wicks if our lovely customers are interested so let us know your thoughts!
My candle arrived in the mail, and it is freezing! Can I burn it right away?
We know you’re probably super excited to light up right away, but patience is key! If your candle is cold, like after being left in the car, let your candle sit at room temperature for at least 24 hours before lighting. A room-temp candle means a smoother burn and an even burn pool.
Do your candles expire?
All candles are best used within a year or two of purchase. Our candles are typically made just days or weeks before you receive them, and we recommend that you burn them within a year of purchase. While we know that we sometimes love holding on to our favourite scents, over time candles can lose their smell and not burn as well. You deserve to enjoy a moment of exquisiteness anytime so light that candle and soak up the moment!
What’s the best way to store my candle?
Keep your candle stored at room temperature, somewhere dry and away from direct sunlight (this is especially important for candles made with 100% essential oils). Store it in the box if you still have it and your candle will be ready for action whenever you are!
What to do with my jar?
This is a great time to get creative!
Once our candles are burnt down, we encourage you to repurpose them. To clean out empty candle jars using the boiling water method, start by removing any remaining wax residue with a butter knife or similar tool. Subsequently, carefully pour boiling water into the jar, allowing it to melt and loosen any stubborn remnants, making it easier to wipe clean with a cloth or sponge.
Use your vessel to pot a plant, hold office supplies, catch all those vanity items like hair ties or Q-tips or cotton balls, store candies or nuts, and much more. We would love to see photos of your recycled jars.
